The Small Business Owner’s Guide to Alternative Financing
by Karlene Sinclair-Robinson

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Ms. Sinclair-Robinson is one smart lady you absolutely want to meet! Be sure to pick up this guide for your success in small business. The book is not just a guide for alternative funding – she touches base on everything a small business owner needs to know to compete in today’s economy.
As a third-time business owner, I wish I had this knowledge when I tried the first time. Section 1 helps you review the basics for getting started in business; the importance of cleaning up your credit; and the many myths associated with financing. Another very important topic covered is business planning and how you can use your business plan to accomplish your goals and stay on a successful track.
In Section 2, you will find advantages and disadvantages for every kind of financing available – both traditional and alternative. Many of these I was aware of but did not fully understand until I read this book. A few options were pleasant surprises I intend to exploit!
This is a must-have tool for any business owner – no matter the size. Thank you so much for publishing it!
I’d been looking for a good resource to help get my small business off the ground, when I got The Small Business Owner’s Guide to Alternative Funding. This book literally has everything I could want. Karlene Sinclair-Robinson clearly did her homework, and her straight-forward, clear writing style have made this the most approachable resource I’ve found on starting and funding my small business.
For me, the most useful aspects of the book have been the following: the simplified breakdown of the advantages and disadvantages of different business entities (sole-proprietorship, LLC, etc.); information about whether or not you can qualify as a minority-owned business, and how to do so; a clear and concise breakdown of exactly what lenders look at when considering you for loans; guidance for writing a successful and usable business plan that can both help you obtain financing, and that can keep your business on the pathway to either large-scale or small-scale goals; an extensive list of alternative funding options — including the requirements, advantages and disadvantages of each.
I can’t rave enough about the organization of this book. It takes you from the point of your business’ creation, through the development of your business plan, the hiring of employees, and the obtainment of funding from both the usual sources and alternative sources — even if you have poor credit, and you haven’t been able to get financing in the past. Karlene included some very helpful appendices, such as a list of case-studies for real businesses that have used alternative funding, definitions of financial terminology and even a list of the most useful websites for small business owners. I highly recommend this book to every small business owner, whether you’re just starting out, or you’ve had a successful business for several years.
Usually when one is faced with a problem they may say that there is only one way to solve it. That is the default way, the regular way, the vetted way to solve that issue. However, we may spend ample time hitting our heads against the wall when that default solution doesn’t work time and time again. This book provides many alternatives that are solid to getting funding for small businesses that are effective and can free your mind from worrying that you are dependent only on one solution.
This book is well researched and written by someone who is obviously an expert in this field. For small businesses to survive, they need options for competitive funding. Banks do not always come through for the small business owners. This information cannot easily be accessed so it is very good that Karlene has put it all together for easy access.
I have read this book and was amazed by the amount of valuable information it contains. Who knew that such resources even existed. I highly recommend anyone one who owns a small business or is planning to start one invest in this excellent book.
